About the ADU

  • ADU Category: Garage conversion
  • ADU Type: One-Bedroom
  • Square Feet: 500
  • ADU Location: San Jose, California

Our client sought to transform their existing garage into a compact, efficient, and modern one-bedroom accessory dwelling unit (ADU). The aim was to create a comfortable living space in San Jose, California, ideal for generating income, without compromising on essential amenities and aesthetic appeal.

We successfully designed, permitted and completed the 500 square foot garage conversion into a one-bedroom ADU that perfectly meets the client's specifications. This smart-sized home design exemplifies how smaller living spaces can be both practical and stylish.

The ADU features a spacious kitchen with room for full-size appliances. The sink peninsula connects the living area, offering bar-top seating for a seamless blend of functionality and style. The living area has a high ceiling and includes a tall window wall, providing ample natural light and enhancing the sense of space. The kitchen, bathroom and laundry areas feature skylights that let in a lot of light.

The large bedroom, designed with a 9-foot-high ceiling, accommodates plenty of furniture and storage, ensuring comfort and convenience. It has a separate door opening into a nice backyard with fruit trees, which serves as an inviting outdoor retreat.

The interior design reflects a modern yet simple aesthetic, ideal for those looking to downsize from larger homes while maintaining a high quality of life.

This 500 square foot ADU not only provides a comfortable living environment but also offers significant cost savings. Reduced maintenance and utility costs, coupled with the benefits of a minimalist lifestyle, make this ADU a practical and sustainable living solution. The compact size of the home means less space to heat or cool, leading to lower electricity bills and fewer maintenance tasks.

A garage conversion sometimes brings additional challenges – an existing garage may be encroaching into setbacks, there may not be sufficient slope between the garage slab and sewer connections at the house, or the existing garage slab may not provide sufficient structural integrity. SFBayADU has a lot of experience in this space, and we can catch such issues in the design phase, so they don’t affect the project during the construction phase.

This project demonstrates our commitment to delivering innovative, high-quality housing solutions that meet the diverse needs of our clients, setting a new standard for affordable and efficient living in San Jose.
