Backyard House in Mountain View

Our client requested a compact, efficient, and cost-effective living space to generate rental income, while keeping the character of the existing home. The goal was to create a one-bedroom backyard house in Mountain View, California, with an emphasis on sustainability and low maintenance costs, to maximize rental cash flow.

The lot was odd-shaped, which presented several design challenges to us. There was an existing swimming pool in the space, which we removed and back-filled, while we designed and permitted a custom 600 square foot, one-bedroom accessory dwelling unit (ADU) that perfectly aligned with the client's vision. The design embodies the growing trend of "tiny houses," which have gained significant popularity due to economic shifts and a renewed focus on minimalistic living.

This ADU offers several advantages, including reduced construction and maintenance costs, high energy efficiency, and high-quality finishes. Despite its compact size, the house provides a comfortable living space with modern, sleek interiors characterized by clean, simple lines and efficient use of space.
